What does a foley artist do in movies?

Today's Q and A

Q - What does a foley artist do in movies?

A - Invented by Jack Donovan Foley, a foley artist creates sound effects that are edited into a film usually in post production.  Sounds effects can vary widely as the need for a specific sound effect that is required in a scene.  With the advent of digital technology and sound sampling the use of foley artists is more limited to larger budget Hollywood movies. Most films and television productions today access sound effects libraries to add foley effects to an existing soundtrack.
