Q - What is a mottled wash in art?
A - A mottled wash effect is a mix of various colors using a painterly technique, usually as a background of a painting or as added texture to an object or model. Some application tools that can be used include brushes, sponges, rags and so on to to enhance the effect. Blending is somewhat minimized to allow for each individual color to show through. A mottled wash is a painting technique found in various mediums including watercolor, acrylic and oil paints.
