Today's Art Q and A
Q - What is water used for in watercolors?
A - Water has many uses in watercolor painting other than the application of paint to the paper. It can thin paint or be applied to the paper before painting. Water can be used to remove paint from paper, bleed colors after the paint has dried or while it is still wet. Water can be used marginally to allow more pigment to be applied as well. Color can be added to water for pouring effects on paper or even sprayed on the paper for effect. In fact, with the use of masking techniques a entire painting can be created with pouring colored water on paper.
