A - A style of painting that focused on bold colors, a painterly quality and strong, textural brush strokes. The movement developed in Paris, France around 1905. Henri Matisse was considered the leader in the fauvist movement. Fauvism was a departure from earlier impressionism with less empasis on realism and inspired the German expressionist movement. Both fauvism and expressionism were contributors to the development of avant-garde art in the early 20th century.
