Q - What are Pastels?
A - Pastels are an art medium made up of pigment and a binder. Typically, pastels are available in stick form but are also found as pastel pencils as well. Soft oil pastels are the most common form of pastels used by artists.
Pastels are a very popular medium largely because of the strong pigmented colors and flexibility of use allowing for very bold and colorful renderings. Other types of pastels include hard pastels, which are great for creating backgrounds. Chalk pastels are also available and can be used for layering over hard pastels for creating middle and foregrounds.
Blending of pastels can be achieved through a variety of techniques including blending with fingers or a soft cloth. Brushes can be used, along with the use of the length of the pastel stick, varing the pressure for creating layering effects. As with any medium, the more you experiment the more techniques become available and aware for you to use.
