What is wax resist used for in painting?

Today's Art Q and A

Q -,What is wax resist used for in painting?

A - Wax resist is used in watercolor painting mainly to preserve the white of the paper before paint is applied. It can be used in the form of a white crayon or colored pencil that is applied to the paper or similar wax material can be used.  The use of wax resist does allow for some paint to pass through on the paper unless applied vigorously.  Wax resist is best used with the intent of creating texture in the painting.
